Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday (26) followed many traditions, but also included some surprises, according to the correspondent of CNN International In the Vatican, Christopher Lamb.
1. The Pope’s last trip
Pope Francis was transferred from the Vatican to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore at Paparmobile on Saturday morning, passing through the streets of Rome. “No one had predicted that,” according to Lamb.
2. Meetings of world leaders
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met before the funeral. “Throughout his life, Francis made repeated appeals for peace, for the dialogue between the world leaders. How appropriate to see a meeting happening” in St. Peter’s Basilica, Lamb said.
3. A hopeful energy
Lamb stated that “although the service was dark, and seriously, it was also hopeful,” mentioning that the huge audience broke out in spontaneous applause during stretches of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re’s homily on the Pope’s funeral.
