Graciela Meraviglio was a seamstress of Pope Francis’ baptines even before he assumed as leader of the Catholic Church. In an exclusive interview with CNN, She revealed that Francisco didn’t want to be a pontiff.
Meraviglio reported that he met the Pope around 1990. According to the seamstress, he was at a very austere table made of wood, with a figure from St. Joseph. He was reading a book, wearing pants, a clérgima and a sweater.
After she introduced herself and commented that she was ecclesiastical tailor, Francis replied, “You? I expected an older person to come and make a cassock to me. But why are you going to make a cassock to me?”
The seamstress stressed that she needed to make the cassock, but the priest refused, calling her “Gypsy” and punctuating that she would never wear a cassock and that she didn’t need it.
“And then my relationship with him started with a fight. He was a person who confronted a lot and who started debates,” he said.
“I made him the first cassock and he said to me, ‘why am I going to use it?’ And I told you, ‘Why are you going to be monsignor. You will be named monsignor in Buenos Aires.’ It was November 27 that he should come.”
The seamstress also commented in an interview with CNN who made Monsignor, Cardinal and Pope’s cassock, but then Francis only accepted adjustments, even if she offered herself to make a new outfit.
Remembering another conversation with Francisco, Meraviglio commented, “And he argued with me again and said, ‘No, no, I won’t be a Pope, I don’t want to. Why do you want me to be a Pope?’. ‘I don’t want to’, I said, ‘I think, I have a feeling.’
“Well, when they named him, and became known all over the world that he was him, he called me and said: You’re no longer a gypsy, you are a witch now, he told me,” he added.
Finally, Meraviglio stressed that Francis said she would be the only one who could do the knockout, because she knew his “defects”.
