Pope Francis was released from hospital on Friday morning, nine days after undergoing surgery to repair an abdominal hernia.
The 86-year-old pontiff left Rome’s Gemelli hospital in a wheelchair, waving to reporters and supporters at the main entrance as he was led to a waiting car.
“The pope is fine. He is in better shape than before,” explained Sergio Alfieri, head surgeon who operated on Francisco on June 7.
Alfieri said the pope was well enough to travel. Francisco has trips scheduled to Portugal in early August and to Mongolia at the end of that month.
Their appointments were canceled until June 18th.
The pope traditionally takes leave for the entire month of July, with Sunday’s blessings being his only public appearances, so he has the next month to rest up before his August trips.
