Pope Francis Funeral: Timelapse shows thousands of faithful gathering

A video in Timelapse shows crowds gathering in São Pedro Square, in the Vatican City, hours before the present body mass and the funeral procession of Pope Francis, which took place on Saturday (26).

Presidents, royalty members and mourning people said goodbye to Francis in a solemn funeral ceremony, where a cardinal appealed to the legacy of the pontiff of care for immigrants, the oppressed and the environment to be kept alive.

The Argentine Pope, who was in power for 12 years, died at the age of 88 on Monday (21), after suffering a stroke, followed by irreversible heart failure.

The Vatican estimated that more than 250,000 people attended the ceremony, crowding the square and the streets around.

The faithful burst into applause when Italian cardinal Giovanni Battista re spoke about Francisco’s care with immigrants, his constant calls for peace, the need for negotiations to end wars and the importance of approaching climate change.

There were also palms at the end of the service, when the porters took the coffin and leaned it slightly so that more people could see.

After the funeral, while the great bells of St. Peter’s Basilica sounded in mourning, the coffin was placed in an open popemobile led by the heart of Rome to the Basilica of St. Maria Maggiore.
