Pope Francis’ funeral is first trip abroad of Trump since

Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday (26) marks the first trip of US President Donal Trump abroad since his return to the White House.

Prior to the pontiff’s death, Trump’s first visit abroad was scheduled for May in Saudi Arabia.

But hours after the announcement of Francis’ death, the leader ordered the US flags to be raised in half a mast “in respect of the memory of his holiness, Pope Francis.”

“Melania and I will go to Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome. We look forward to being there!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday (21).

In December, Trump – then president -elect – attended the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which marked his non -official return to the international scenario before the inauguration.

His presence in Rome today can offer a rare opportunity for world leaders to personally get involved with Trump, while countries around the world deal with the consequences of the president’s punitive tariffs.

“It will be very interesting,” Trump told reporters in front of the White House on Friday, before traveling to Rome. “Let’s meet many foreign leaders – they want to meet.”

Hours after the Pope’s death announcement on Monday, Trump ordered US flags to be raised in half a mast “as a sign of respect for the memory of his holiness, Pope Francis.”
