Pope Francis’ criticism against Trump were remembered during homily

Cardinal Giovanni Re, dean of the Cardinian College, included a sentence in his homily to Pope Francis who can be interpreted as a reference to the pontiff’s harsh criticism of the president of the United States, Donald Trump.

“’Build bridges, no walls’ was a (Francisco) exhortation often repeated, and his faithful service as the successor of the apostle Pedro has always been linked to the service of humanity in all its dimensions,” said the cardinal near the end of the homily, with Trump between the audience full of world leaders he was listening to.

As Re said, Francisco manifested against the walls on several occasions, calling the US President’s plans to a Wall on the US-Mixic border of “non-Christians” in February 2016.

“Anyone who thinks only about building walls, wherever they are, not building bridges, is not a Christian. This is not the gospel,” the Pope told reporters who asked Trump’s proposals to stop illegal immigration in the US.

Later that year, two days before the US election that elected Trump president for the first time, the pontiff warned against “social walls” and “false prophets” that feed fear and intolerance in politics.

In January 2019, on a visit to Panama, Francis said to thousands of Catholics gathered to see him that “the wall builders sow fear” and “divide people.”

A few months later, the Pope stated that “those who build walls will become prisoners of the walls that have lifted … this is history.”

Goodbye to Pope Francis

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took over the title of Pontiff in March 2013.

He marked the history of the Catholic Church as the first Latin American Pope and the first Jesuit to occupy the position.

The pontiff died at age 88 after a stroke, followed by irreversible heart failure.

Francisco’s funeral took place this Saturday (26) and lasted about two hours and ten minutes, bringing together over 250,000 people and heads of state around the world.
