Pope Francis cancels appointments, but has recovered from mild flu, says cardinal

Pope Francis canceled his appointments this Monday (26), for the second time in three days, because he has a mild flu. However, a senior cardinal later said the 87-year-old pontiff was already making a complete recovery.

Francis was forced to absent himself from meetings on Saturday (24) and although he appeared in public on Sunday (25) to deliver his weekly Angelus message, the Vatican said his audiences on Monday were suspended as a precaution.

“Mild flu-like symptoms persist, without fever,” said a statement from the Vatican.

Later, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's secretary of state and second-in-command, said the pope was “fine” and had overcome the flu.

“He recovered and resumed his normal activities,” Parolin told the Ansa news agency during an event in Rome.

The pope has suffered some health problems in recent months and was forced to cancel a trip to a COP28 climate meeting in Dubai in December due to the effects of flu and lung inflammation.

In January, he was unable to complete a speech due to “a bit of bronchitis.” At the end of that month, he reported that he was better, despite “some pain”.

As a young man in his native Argentina, Francisco had part of a lung removed.

The pope also has difficulty walking and regularly uses a wheelchair, including in a meeting last week with Argentine President Javier Milei.
