Pope Francis was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, the Vatican said on Saturday (26).
The “rite of the burial of the Roman Pontiff” began at 8am, Brasilia time (1 pm, local time), at a ceremony presided by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the “Camerlengo” in charge of taking care of the Pope’s funeral that will soon help organize the conclave to choose Francisco’s successor.
The ceremony ended at 1:30 pm, added the Holy See.
Francis is the first Pope over a century to be buried outside the Vatican walls.
In his will, the pontiff asked that in his grave was inscribed only the word: “Franciscus.”
