Polygon zkEVM is back in action

On March 23, a failure occurred in the Polygon zkEVM second-level Ethereum network, as a result of which the blockchain, launched about a year ago, stopped for more than 10 hours.

“The beta version of the Polygon zkEVM mainnet encountered an issue in the sequencer due to an L1 reorganization,” the team reported.

Fixing the glitch required activation of emergency mode, which allowed the developers to apply the necessary fixes to the system to resume interaction with the first level.

The multi-hour blockchain delay only affected the Polygon zkEVM and did not affect the main Polygon PoS network or any others deployed using the Polygon CDK.

After the incident ended, the emergency mode was turned off. This means that all protocol updates will be activated with a standard 10-day delay, the team recalled. She will present the results of her investigation into the failure this week.

Polygon zkEVM launched on March 27, 2023 with the first symbolic transaction of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The network uses a rollup architecture with zero-knowledge proof technology.

“Polygon has great solutions. We must not allow the failure of the sequencer to ruin any reputation. It happens, mistakes happen, it’s early technology,” commented Fuel Labs CEO and co-founder Nick Dodson.

He admitted that their modular Fuel blockchain based on Optimistic Rollups may well encounter similar problems. The launch of the mainnet is expected in the third quarter.
