Americans’ opinions of Vice President Kamala Harris are sharply divided, with 43% viewing her favorably and 42% unfavorably, while another 14% have no opinion, according to an ABC/Ipsos poll released Sunday (28).
That’s an improvement for Kamala from a poll released the previous week, in which 35% viewed her favorably and 46% unfavorably.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has a 36% favorability rating, compared to 52% unfavorability.
That’s slightly lower than a week ago, after the Republican National Convention and the assassination attempt on him, but still higher than the rate for him during most of this campaign cycle.
Senator JD Vance, Trump’s vice presidential candidate, has seen negative sentiment toward him increase from 31% unfavorable last week to 39% this week.
The change largely reflects a drop in the share of people who had no opinion of him.
“Double haters”
Overall, the poll found that 7% of Americans have negative views of both Kamala and Trump — cutting the number of so-called “double haters” by nearly half, compared with the 15% who said last week they had negative views of both Joe Biden and Trump.
Other recent research has found a similar movement.
Democrats excited about Kamala Harris
The poll found that 88% of Democrats say they are at least somewhat excited about Kamala Harris running for president.
Already 82% of Republicans say they are at least somewhat enthusiastic about Donald Trump as the GOP nominee.
Overall, about half (48%) of Americans say they are excited about Harris becoming the Democratic nominee, with 39% expressing enthusiasm for Trump as the GOP nominee. The poll did not directly ask about voting preferences.
Methodology
The ABC News/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,200 U.S. adults on July 26 and 27 using a nationally representative online panel.
The results have a margin of error of three percentage points.
