German police killed a gunman after a shootout near the Israeli consulate in central Munich on Thursday (5), authorities said.
The suspect was armed with an antique long gun when he was shot at Karolinenplatz, a square near the Israeli consulate and a Nazi documentation center, Munich police said.
The suspect was fatally wounded after an exchange of gunfire, Munich police said in a post on X.
Police have not revealed a possible motive and an investigation is ongoing. A helicopter was dispatched to provide a more detailed assessment of the incident, according to Reuters.
The incident occurred on the anniversary of the terrorist attack at the 1972 Munich Olympics – when a Palestinian militant group entered the training camp of the Israeli national team. Eleven Israeli athletes were killed.
It is unclear whether Thursday’s incident is related to the 1972 event, but the nearby Israeli consulate was closed for an event.
On Facebook, Talya Lador-Fresher, Israel’s Consul General in Munich, said: “We are very grateful to the Munich police for their actions and cooperation. This event shows how dangerous the rise of anti-Semitism is. It is important that the general public speaks out against this. Our Consulate General was closed today to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the terrorist attack at the Olympics.”
