Police arrest suspects of carrying out fake cryptocurrency investment scams

The Civil Police of Santa Catarina carried out, together with the civil police of Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, an operation against a group of suspects responsible for applying false investment scams in cryptocurrencies, this Thursday (15).

In total, Operation Cripto Farsa carried out eight search and seizure warrants in cities in Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, where electronic devices and various documents were seized.

The objects will be analyzed to help continue the investigations, in addition to identifying the others involved in the scam.

How false investment works

According to delegate Leonardo Silva, responsible for the case, the scam worked through advertisements published by the suspects, which attracted investments in cryptocurrencies and promised victims profits of between 2 and 4% per month, in addition to a share per year.

Police investigations began after an elderly woman filed a police report in Lages (SC), a city located about 230 kilometers from Florianópolis.

According to the state’s Civil Police, the woman invested R$90,000 in the purchase of bitcoins, however, she did not receive the promised profit and even lost the amount initially invested.

In the last three years, the suspects have moved more than R$900 million and are responsible for several victims in other states, in addition to Santa Catarina.
