‘Poland will never recognize territorial changes’ in Ukraine, says Polish chancellor

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau declared on Saturday that his country will not recognize territorial changes in Ukraine resulting from the Russian invasion.

The chancellor granted the statement after meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the Polish city of Rzeszow.

“Poland will never recognize territorial changes stemming from unprovoked and unlawful aggression in the way Russia conducts hostilities based on the desire to break the will of the Ukrainian resistance through attacks that terrorize the civilian population. Bombings of residential areas and nuclear power plants are war crimes under international law, which are not subject to the statute of limitations and will be pursued with the utmost determination,” Rau said.

Speaking to the press, Blinken and Rau announced a unified approach to assisting refugees and opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Rau reiterated his country’s support for the people of Ukraine, adding the importance of an evacuation corridor “that would facilitate the evacuation of Ukrainian citizens.”

Responding to Rau, Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the people of Ukraine and thanked Poland for its work in housing Ukrainian refugees.

“As allies and partners, Poland and the United States have faced many challenges together. Now, the great ideals that unite us – freedom, democracy, peace, security – are under threat in this region as never before, certainly not since the Second World War,” added Blinken.

Blinken also spoke about US efforts to help “vulnerable” populations not only in Ukraine but also in neighboring countries.

“To help refugees in Poland, the Biden administration has just asked Congress for $2.75 billion in humanitarian assistance, which is both to meet the needs of vulnerable communities and people within Ukraine and to support services of refugees here in Poland.”
