The suspicion of poisoning an Easter egg in the interior of Maranhão had pre-trial detention decreed at a custody hearing held last Friday (18).
According to the Maranhão Court of Justice, the case must be sent to the Criminal Court of Imperatriz, where the facts occurred.
Cordelia Pereira Barbosa, 35, is suspected of having poisoned three people in the city of Imperatriz (MA), and has been held since last Thursday (17).
The crime committed resulted in the death of two minors, João Pedro, 7 years old; and Evely Fernanda, 13 years old. The victims’ mother, Mirian Liria, is still hospitalized.

An Easter egg was delivered to the house of Mirian Lira Rocha, in Imperatriz, Maranhão, last Wednesday (16). That night three family people consumed the chocolate: 38 -year -old Mirian Lira; his 7 -year -old son, João Pedro; and his 13 -year -old teenage daughter, Evely Fernanda.
Shortly after eating the candy, the three people started to get sick. The situation worsened quickly to the boy João Pedro, who died on Thursday (17). His mother, Mirian, and his sister, Evely, were rescued and taken in serious condition to the Municipal Hospital of Imperatriz, where they were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Evely Fernanda Rocha Silva, 13, died on Tuesday (22), after six days hospitalized with her mother due to poisoning.
The first findings made by the Civil Police, pointed to Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 35, ex-girlfriend of the current companion of Mirian Lira, as the main suspect.
The investigations revealed that Jordelia would have traveled from Santa Inês to Empress to execute the crime. She would have bought the Easter egg disguised with a wig not to be recognized, according to images of security cameras. The candy was delivered to Mirian’s house by a motorcycle taxi driver, who, according to police, was unaware of the content.
Police arrested Jordelia on the afternoon of last Thursday (17), on a disturbance bus when she was trying to return to Santa Inês. With it were found the wig and the goggles of the disguise, as well as other objects.
The main motivation investigated by the police is jealousy and revenge, due to Jordelia’s previous relationship with Mirian’s current companion.
