Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) declared on Monday (8) official mourning in the state for three days.
Sergeant Dias would have turned 30 on the 27th. He was married and leaves behind, in addition to his wife, Ana Clara, a 5-month-old daughter. Brain death was confirmed on Sunday night (7) after he had been hospitalized for three days.
Remember the case
The police officer, who was assigned to the 13th Battalion of the PM-MG, was shot in the head during a confrontation with a criminal who was on the streets after obtaining the benefit of temporary leave at the end of the year. The case happened on Friday night (5) during an approach.
The suspect was captured and placed in preventive detention. He was taken back to the prison system. According to the PM, he has 18 criminal records.
Operation Shield
The PM began Operation Shield, which aims precisely to recapture fugitives from the penitentiary system, benefiting from temporary release and with an open arrest warrant. According to the corporation, 73 prisoners had not returned to the prison.
Governor Romeu Zema spoke out on social media criticizing the current law.
“Outdated laws could take the life of yet another police officer in Minas. Criminals with a history of violence are allowed to “go out”, which results in insecurity for all Brazilians. It's time for this to end. The change is stalled in Congress. Until when?” he asked.
The president of the National Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), spoke out this Monday morning stating that there is the possibility of changing or even extinguishing the rule that guarantees the right to temporary release of prisoners on commemorative dates.
According to the senator, “the crime was extremely serious and caused everyone great perplexity and sadness. Police officers are dying in the line of duty and this forces us to react. Weapons are in the hands of those who cannot afford to have them, and the freedom to use them is guaranteed to those who should not be free.”
