The Rio de Janeiro Military Police received a new lot of four thousand ballistic helmets, acquired with an investment of $ 10 million from the state government. The measure is part of a set of actions aimed at the protection of agents who work in higher risk operations.
Technical studies and statistical data show that 69% of deaths of police officers in service, in the last five years, have occurred by head injuries caused by firearm shots.
The helmets are made with aramid, a synthetic fiber known for its high strength, stiffness and thermal stability. Light and modern, the equipment offers protection against projectiles, splinters and direct impacts, and have adjustments for more comfort and stability during use.
The distribution of the new equipment was defined based on operational criteria established by the State Secretariat of Military Police (SEPM). According to the agency, the current amount is sufficient to serve all units of the corporation involved in tactical actions and special operations, such as the tactical action group (GAT) and mobile tactical patrolling (level).
With this measure, the use of ballistic helmets becomes mandatory in missions classified as high risk, according to the internal regulation of the PM. To facilitate adaptation to the new protective item, training performed in the Special Operations Command (COE) already incorporate the use of the equipment.
In addition to the ballistic helmets, the Military Police also acquired, in 2023, 1,078 anti-trauma helmets intended for units operating in the control of disorders. This model, resistant to the impact of stones and other blunt objects, was distributed to specialized groups such as the Battalion specializing in stadium policing (BEPE), the Special Rounds Battalion and the Cultão Control (Recom) and the RPMont Police Regiment.
Also according to the PM, the acquisitions aim to reduce the exposure of police to risk in situations of confrontation and public disorders.
