Plane or boat? See how to get to Greenland

While the plane approaches the small airport of the Narsarsuaq community, we can check out the window one of the most peculiar characteristics of the whole Greenland : The impressive ice cloak losing sight of the horizon.

Known as “Ice Sheet”, the glacier ice mass covers about 80% of the territory, which corresponds to an area of more than 1.7 million square meters.

After landing and already on land, it is impossible not to be infected with the thrill of being in one of the most hidden corners of the earth: Arctic . And the sweeping visuals that mix ice, fjords, rocky mountains and small, sparse communities of colorful houses help in the task.

I confess that I was concerned about boarding an adventure trip in full Arctic Without having the size of the place, since it is not such a common destination. But the decision to venture into Greenland, First destination of the fifth season of CNN Viagem & Gastronomy it was more than right.

Disembarking in Greenland is possible air or sea. The territory is served by Commercial airport flights only from Denmark and Iceland but there is also the possibility of coming here aboard a cruise.

There is regular flights that come out of Copenhagen capital of Denmark, and Reykjavik, Keflavik and Akureyri, Iceland which connect a series of locations in Greenland, including the capital Nuuk and the South Narsarsuaq settlement where I arrived.

Denmark flights are an average of 4.5 hours long, while flights from Iceland last between two and three hours.

Already moving between location and another within the territory is a little more complicated: there are no major roads between cities and communities, which means that the only means of transport are boats, helicopters and airplanes.

But one of the best ways to know Greenland authentically and with access to remote areas is through a maritime expedition such as the brand new Overseas , QUARK EXPEDITIONS company specialized in polar expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica.

The expedition: discovering by southern Greenland

Our adventure begins in Reykjavik, Iceland, where we took a plane towards the settlement of NARSARSUAQ community that is gateway to southern Greenland and where we embarked on overseas.

The ship has a capacity of passengers and 140 crew members, being a polar vessel adapted to lead us to places where larger ships do not sail.

But the biggest difference is your two helicopters that are available to the tours scheduled in the itinerary. Thus, they lead us to the most inhospitable and isolated places of the territory, which means that, from the helipad of the ship, they function as a means of transport for memorable experiences.

How about making a trail on the top of a mountain that had never been stepped? Or still land and walk on the great ice cloak? All of this is possible aboard the overseas.

The full itinerary lasts nine days and the ship’s exits take place in July, in the Greenish summer, where the Proposal is to make an expedition by sea, earth and air.

Among the daily activities are included Hiking, kayaking, paddling amid icebergs, visits communities, fjords, thermal baths and visits to viking ruins.

With the programming in hand, we left the ship properly dressed into the Arctic Climate, with waterproof pants, boots and backpacks to spend a lot of time outside the vessel.

Whether on land, air or sea, we are accompanied by an extensive expert team from various areas, environment, geology and even Viking culture, which add an extra layer of knowledge in this distant territory.

It is noteworthy that the packages also include meals, snacks, and drinks, as overseas works as the basis of our expeditions during the time we stayed through the Greenish territory.
