Plane Makes Spooky Dive Into Ocean Shortly After Takeoff

A United Airlines flight departing Hawaii in December 2022 took a dive toward the ocean for 21 seconds shortly after takeoff, coming in at about 250 meters above sea level, flight tracking data shows.

Neither United nor the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States (FAA, in its acronym in English) confirmed that the case left any injuries.

The airline’s Flight 1722 took place on Dec. 18, and the crash occurred just over a minute after takeoff, the data reveals.

The plane lost more than half of its altitude and reached about 250 meters above sea level, according to data from FlightRadar24.

The aircraft gained speed as it dropped more than 430 meters before regaining altitude in Kahului on the island of Maui. The data suggests that the remainder of the flight was uneventful.

United said it conducted an investigation with the FAA and the pilots’ union “which resulted in additional pilot training,” adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Pilots total 25,000 flight hours.

“United Airlines flight crew reported the incident to the FAA as part of a voluntary safety reporting program. The agency has reviewed the incident and taken appropriate action,” the Aviation Administration said. CNN .

While weather conditions at the exact time of the event are unclear, the National Weather Service reported that there was a daily record of rainfall in the area.

The incident, which only now comes to light, was first reported by the website Air Current.
