Planalto receives the news with dismay and issues an order “not to be provoked”

Direct assistants to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) received, with surprise and dismay, the information that the ultra-liberal Javier Milei beat the Peronist Sergio Massa in the second round of elections in Argentina.

There was an expectation, at Palácio do Planalto, that Massa would surpass Milei by a small margin of votes. The optimism of Lula and his advisors grew after the Peronist’s performance in last Sunday’s presidential debate.

The general order, among Lula’s foreign policy advisors, is not to respond to any criticism or insults from Milei towards the PT member. The Brazilian has already been called a “communist” and “corrupt” by the elected president of Argentina.

As CNN heard from one of Lula’s interlocutors, the order is “not to fall for provocations” while trying to build bridges. Saying he preferred not to make public statements, an experienced advisor said only: “South America will become a more complex region.”
