Pix adds 26 billion transactions since launch, reveals Febraban

Pix, the instant payments system created by the Central Bank, has totaled 26 billion transactions since its launch, on November 16, 2020, until September this year, according to a survey carried out by the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban).

The amounts transacted through the tool reached R$ 12.9 trillion in the same period.

Since February 2022, Pix is the most used payment method in Brazil, ahead of credit cards.

Previously, it had already surpassed debit cards, boletos and the TED and DOC, models for transferring resources in operation for a longer time.

The president of Febraban, Isaac Sidney, says that the growth of Pix shows the popular acceptance of the tool. According to him, in the last 12 months, operations using the system grew 94%.

“I also emphasize that Pix was and continues to be a fundamental tool to boost banking and financial inclusion in the country and since its launch it has been an important opportunity for Brazil to reduce the need to use cash in commercial transactions and the high costs of transport and logistics of banknotes, which total around R$ 10 billion a year”, he says in a note.

In September, transactions via Pix moved BRL 1.02 trillion, with an average ticket of BRL 444. TED had a greater financial volume, of BRL 3.4 trillion, thanks to an also higher average value per transfer, of BRL 40.6 thousand.

“The numbers show that the population is using Pix as a lower-value means of payment, for example, in transactions with self-employed professionals, and also for day-to-day purchases, which would be made with banknotes, as predicted at the time of the launch of the tool”, says Leandro Vilain, Executive Director of Innovation, Products and Banking Services at Febraban.

In the South, it was 12%, and in the North, another 10%. Of the system users, 64% were between 20 and 39 years old.

Since the system’s launch, 523.2 million Pix keys have been registered in the BC directory.

The largest share (213.9 million) was formed by random keys, followed by CPFs (114.2 million), mobile (108.3 million), and e-mail (77.5 million). Until October, according to Febraban, 141.4 million Brazilians had already used Pix.

The entity also highlights that member banks invest around R$ 3 billion a year to make users’ financial transactions more secure.

Febraban participates in the Pix Forum, promoted by the BC, and states that in case of changes to the system, it will endeavor to implement them within the deadline established by the regulator.
