An 80-year-old woman died this Tuesday morning, the 1st, after being attacked by a dog she was taking care of, in the neighborhood of Grajaú, south of the capital of São Paulo. She was found with injuries to her neck, lying in the backyard after neighbors called police for help, according to a police report registered by the São Paulo Civil Police. The dog’s owner is being investigated.
Neighbors called for help after hearing suspicious noises coming from the backyard. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters tried to resuscitate the woman, but were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, the dog was contained and did not pose a risk, according to the BO
The animal’s 27-year-old owner was not at the scene when firefighters and police arrived. Minutes later, he arrived reporting that he had returned home immediately after being informed of the attack. He said he had the dog, a Pitbull breed, since he was a puppy and said he took “the necessary precautions to guard the animal”.
According to the man, the animal was trapped, although, not knowing how, it managed to escape.
The woman was responsible for the animal’s daily care, providing food and water, in addition to keeping the environment clean, according to the animal’s owner. He also said that the victim did not like the Pitbull breed and, “as a result, was sometimes aggressive towards the animal”, which, according to him, could have motivated the attack.
The Police requested local expertise and a necroscopic examination and stated that “the fact, as narrated, requires, for the purposes of criminal liability, further investigation”, attributing the nature of a suspicious death.
“In effect, the absence of eyewitnesses and/or images makes it impossible to safely determine that the animal’s owner failed to exercise caution in guarding, with an increase in risk for people who cohabit the same space,” stated the delegate responsible for the case.
