United States President Donald Trump gave a broad interview to Time magazine, addressing fees, peace efforts between Ukraine and Russia, the nuclear agreement with Iran, the desire for Canada to become a US state and much more.
The meeting included Trump saying that she would sign a ban on Congress members negotiate actions, which she does not want to use “breaches” to run for a third term and that she did not ask El Salvador to deported an undocumented immigrant deported by mistake.
He rejected the idea that he is expanding the presidency’s powers, stating that he is using the position “how it should be used” in his second term.
“What I’m doing is exactly what I defended in my campaign,” he said.
The president also addressed some family themes, including claiming, without evidence, that there was “cheating” in the 2020 and 2024 elections and that the tariffs are good for the country.
Check out the main points that stood out from Trump’s interview:
1) “200 trade agreements”
Trump said in the interview that he closed “200 agreements” with companies and countries after suspending new fares about them. But the White House has not announced any of them, and Trump refused to detail any specific agreements.
In addition, Trump said that if the US still had 50% tariffs over foreign countries in a year, he would still consider it a “total victory” because “the country would be gaining a fortune.”
Asked why he did not announce the agreements signed, Trump stated that commercial negotiations would be completed in the coming weeks. Trump started the 90 -day break on April 9.
“I would say that in the next three to four weeks, we will be ready,” he said. “We’ll be ready.”
Still, Trump left room for flexibility, saying that some negotiations can continue beyond this goal: “Some countries may go back and ask for an adjustment, and I will consider it.”
2) Negotiations with China
Trump said in the interview that negotiations with China about tariffs are underway, although Chinese authorities are firmly affirming the opposite.
Trump even said that Chinese President Xi Jinping called him: “He called. And I don’t think this is a sign of weakness on his part.” Trump gave no details about the call or when it occurred.
However, when pressured by CNN This Friday morning about if Trump had spoken to Xi since the tariffs were implemented in Beijing, he refused to comment.
“I don’t want to comment on it, but I talked to him many times,” Trump said in response to Alayna Treene of CNN when leaving South Lawn.
3) Case opens Garcia
Trump said he did not ask El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, to send Kilmar Embego Garcia back – an undocumented immigrant who was erroneously deported to El Salvador – despite a Supreme Court decision that said the Trump government had to “facilitate” its return.
“No,” said Trump. “He said he wouldn’t do that.”
Trump generally gave way to the Justice Department’s lawyers most of the team questions about the status of Abrego Garcia, including saying that it would be up to the lawyers to decide if they wanted to start to facilitate the return of Abrego Garcia.
“Right now, they just don’t want to do that. They say we’re in full conformity with the Supreme Court,” he said.
4) Canada as part of the USA
Trump indicated to the team that he seriously brings the idea of making Canada the 51st US state – a message that has repeatedly irritated the allied nation.
“I’m not really kidding,” said Trump.
“We are taking care of their armed forces. We are taking care of all aspects of their lives, and we don’t need them to make cars for us. In fact, we don’t want them to make cars for us,” Trump said.
“We don’t need their wood. We don’t need their energy. We don’t need anything from Canada. And I say that the only way to really work is that Canada becomes a state.”
Trump added that he would “not care” if his legacy as president included the expansion of territory.
5) Third term
The president publicly flirted with the possibility of running again for the presidency in 2028, violating the 22nd amendment, which determines that the presidents can only hold two terms.
He indicated that, although there are “some gaps that were discussed” to allow his reelection, he “does not believe in the use of gaps.”
“I have more people begging me to run again, but I didn’t even consider this possibility,” Trump added.
These statements contradict Trump’s comments at the end of March, when he said he “wasn’t kidding” about the possibility of running for a third term.
Trump Store, run by Trump Organization, also began selling “Trump 2028” cap early this week.
6) CUTS IN MEDICAID
If Republicans in Congress approve of a party bill involving great cuts in Medicaid, Trump promised in the interview to veto him.
Republican Congress leaders said the planned cuts would be only due to waste, fraud and abuse in Medicaid, but experts questioned whether these reductions would actually reach $ 800 billion that Republican leaders are aiming for their party bill.
Trump reiterated the goals of cutting only “waste, fraud and abuse” in the interview, but said he would veto the bill if he involved other cuts in the program – probably good news for centrist republican legislators who said they would not support major cuts on Medicid.
7) War between Russia and Ukraine
As part of the peace proposal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, Trump stated that “Crimea will remain with Russia” – which would violate international law, which usually does not recognize forced territorial acquisitions.
He would also contradict the statement of the first Trump administration, which reaffirmed “as a policy of its refusal to recognize Kremlin’s claims of sovereignty about tight territories, in violation of international law.”
“If Crimea remains with Russia – we have to talk only about Crimea, because it is always mentioned. Crimea will remain with Russia. And Zelensky understands that, and everyone understands that she has been with them for a long time,” said Trump.
Publicly, Zelensky indicated that recognizing the occupation of Crimea is a limit to him in negotiations.
He told reporters earlier this week: “Ukraine will not legally recognize the occupation of Crimea. There is nothing to discuss. It is against our Constitution.” Putin invaded Crimea in February 2014.
Trump also said that Ukraine’s attempts to join Otan triggered the invasion of Russia – and the president said he doesn’t believe Ukraine “will ever be able to join NATO.”
8) Middle East War
Trump told Time that he was not concerned with the fact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dragging the US to future future war with Iran, because he would “right” if they could not reach a nuclear deal with Iran.
“I can do it goodwill if we do not get an agreement. If we do not reach an agreement, I will be in the lead,” Trump said, referring to negotiations in progress with Iran about a nuclear agreement.
Trump also denied New York Times reports that he had prevented Israel from attacking Iran during nuclear negotiations.
“I didn’t stop them. But I didn’t make them comfortable, because I think we can close an agreement without the attack,” Trump told Time.
9) Saudi Arabia and Abraham’s agreements
Trump also said he believes that Saudi Arabia will join Abraham’s agreements, a Trump’s first term agreement aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East, which was initially signed by Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
“I’ll tell you something: I think Saudi Arabia will join Abraham’s agreements,” he said. Trump travels to Saudi Arabia next month on his second trip abroad.
“We had four countries there, it was all ready. We would have crowded. Now let’s start over,” said Trump.
