A journalist was killed at his home on Philippines, announced the police of the country that is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.
Orlando Dinoi, a reporter for Newsline Philippines and a presenter for Energy FM, was killed by six bullets from a gunman, who broke into his apartment in Bansalan, Mindanao Island, said local police chief Peter Glen Ipong.
The journalist died on the spot, he added, while noting that an investigation has been launched to determine the motives of the murder. “One of the versions we are considering is his work as a man of the press”, Ipong added.
Dino is the 21st journalist killed since 2016 when Rodrigo Duterte was elected President of the Philippines, the National Association of Filipino Journalists announced.
National Police Commander Guillermo Eleazar called for an in-depth investigation and pledged to protect the media from the attacks.
In a report released this month, the New York-based Commission to Protect Journalists ranked the Philippines seventh on the global impunity list, with 13 murders of journalists remaining unsolved.
