Pfizer Vaccine: In which case its effectiveness drops to 47%

The light of publicity sees a new great American scientific research on its effectiveness Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against coronavirus and its time horizon.

In particular, the effectiveness of this vaccine in preventing hospitalization and death remains high. at 90% for at least six months, even against the highly contagious Delta mutation of coronavirus. But on the other hand, its effectiveness in preventing a new infection (of any variant) drops from 88% to 47% after five months from the second dose.

Researchers at Pfizer and the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Southern California, led by epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Tartoff, published the report in The Lancet Medical Journal, according to Reuters, the New York Times and “The Guardian analyzed data on about 3.4 million people with an average age of 45 during the period December 2020-August 2021, of whom 5.4% were diagnosed with coronavirus and 6.6% of them needed treatment.

Pfizer Vaccine: How It Works Against the Delta Mutation

The study found that for those who were fully vaccinated in the first half, the efficacy against the possibility of infection was 73% and against hospitalization 90%. Efficacy against the risk of hospitalization due to Delta strain infection, regardless of age, remained at 93% up to six months, as reported by APE-MPE.

However, efficacy against the possibility of infection decreased from 88% in the first month after full vaccination to 47% after five months. In particular, compared with Delta, the efficacy against the probability of infection was 93% in the first month after the second dose, but was reduced to 53% after four months. Against other coronavirus strains the efficacy was 97% in the first month after full vaccination, but fell to 67% after four to five months.

The study estimates that the reduction is probably due to the weakened efficacy of this vaccine over time, rather than Delta escaping immune protection, a conclusion that probably supports in favor of a third boost after a few months.
