PF opens inquiry to investigate whether there was sabotage in an electrical blackout in the country

The Federal Police opened an inquiry this Tuesday (22) to investigate the causes of the electricity blackout that hit 25 states and the Federal District last week. The investigation will continue in secrecy and will investigate the crimes of sabotage and attacks on public utility service security.

The PF responded to a request made by the ministries of Justice and Mines and Energy. The investigation will be in charge of the Directorate of Police Intelligence of the PF (DIP), in Brasília.

From the inquiry, the police will be able to hear people from the electricity sector and the government. A line overload operated by Eletrobras, in Ceará, was identified as one of the reasons for the blackout.

Among the hypotheses, there is the possibility of a technical failure to human action, including the intentional modality, when there is an intention to commit the crime.

According to the federal government, the occurrence was “extremely rare”. The failure in the National Interconnected System was registered around 8:30 am. It was a fact that caused disruption in the North and Northeast regions.

The blackout spread across the country due to a preventive action to protect the system, in which the National System Operator (ONS) minimized the load in the South, Southeast and Midwest regions, so that there was no total interruption in these regions.

The blackout damaged around 29 million homes and commercial establishments. In some places the blackout lasted ten minutes, in others more than six hours.
