PF carries out operation against loggers and indigenous leaders in Xingu; estimated loss is 1.7 billion

The Federal Police (PF) concluded this Friday (23) an operation focused on combating crimes of deforestation, selective cutting and theft of Union property in the Xingu Indigenous Park.

The PREORI operation, which involved more than 90 agents from the PF and Ibama, took place in the municipalities of Feliz Natal, Nova Ubiratã, Paranatinga and União do Sul, all in Mato Grosso.

Police investigations established the activities of a criminal organization made up of local loggers and some indigenous leaders.

The allegations that culminated in this Friday’s operation involved illegal logging in the Entre Rios region, in Nova Ubiratã.

The reports by the federal police pointed to logging in an area of ​​7,800 hectares. The estimated total damage from environmental degradation in indigenous lands in the region is around R$ 1.7 billion.
