Petrobras president should not change pricing policy, says Abicom president

the election of Caio Mario Paes de Andrade as new president of Petrobras should not lead to a change in the state-owned company’s pricing policy, according to Sérgio Araújo, president of Abicom (Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers).

In an interview with CNN this Monday (27), he stated that he does not believe in an attempt by the federal government to change the parity with the international prices of the Petroleum and evaluated Andrade’s approval as positive.

“Petrobras is a very large company, and it really needs to have a leader, a president. The longer it stays in this interim condition, the worse, but I don’t believe it will make a change in the pricing policy”, he said.

He pointed out that the state-owned company has a commitment to commercialize its commodities following market prices, and that he doesn’t see how the company could do it differently.

Araújo also stated that, if the state-owned company holds future price adjustments, there would be the possibility of a shortage. “The practice of artificial pricing by Petrobras inhibits the performance of import operations by private agents. I don’t think anyone will be willing to import and compete with an agent the size of Petrobras, it is natural that operations would be reduced or even eliminated, and in a context of greater demand, the risk of shortages increases”.

the president of abicom assesses that the current lags in relation to international prices, of 10% for gasoline and 9% for diesel, “make it impossible to carry out import operations by independent agents, so this realignment is necessary, and that is what the market expects”. , that Petrobras continue with the policy of matching and aligning with market prices, considering that unfortunately Brazil does not have enough refining capacity to meet demand”.

Without interference, Araújo says he does not believe in a scenario of shortage of diesel especially as the large importers are already seeking to guarantee the volume needed to meet their contracts.

He states, however, that “customers without contracts and not linked to distributors may be more vulnerable, it may evolve into a problem in supply, but not shortages”.
