Peter Pan & Wendy: the best (and worst) films about the flying child

Peter Pan & Wendy fly to Disney+ in the wait live-action remake of the animated film of the same name, based on the work of James Matthew Barrie. Seventy years have passed since the 14th Disney classic in which all the Nine Old Men (the nine historical animators of the Studios) collaborated together for the last time, delivering to the collective imagination the Neverland with the crocodile that goes “tick tock”. Today, the «lost boys» become the lost girls, Tinker Bell is Afro-descendant and the eternal boy has olive skin. With these premises, Peter Pan & Wendy wins the title of most inclusive Disney film yet.

In the role of the two protagonists, the 16-year-old Alexander Molony (here at his absolute debut) e Ever Andersondaughter of Milla Jovovich and Paul WS Anderson, already appeared in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter And Black Widow. Also arrives at Neverland, the choleric Captain Hook of Jude Law. For those who grew up in the early 2000s, this Peter Pan it’s the live-action to beat. We know the story all too well: Peter, the eternal magical boy, arrives at the Darling brothers to fly with them to Neverland. However, they are kidnapped by Captain Hook and Peter has to rescue them and help them get home. Self Hook represented the 90s, Peter Pan ridden by Jeremy Sumpter was the best of its time.

Musical reinterpretation of the boy who didn’t want to grow up played by an «elf» Mia Farrow. Starring Danny Kaye in dual roles as both dastardly pirate and caring dad. An Emmy winner, it aired on NBC.

Neverland – The true story of Peter Pan2011 (failed)

The 2-episode miniseries has the ambition to act as a prequel, rewriting the origins of Peter Pan (Charlie Rowe): an orphan who lives by pickpocketing on the streets of a smoky London, together with his gang of petty thieves. Their evil mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) convinces them to steal a magical treasure that catapults them to Neverland.

Hook – Captain Hook1991 (promoted)

An adult Peter Pan must save his children from his old nemesis, Captain Hook. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the king of blockbusters of the 90s, starring Robin Williams at the height of his powers and a Tinker Bell Julia Roberts, back from the resounding success of pretty woman. Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook? Cherry on the cake!

Wendy2020 (failed)

From Sundance, a creative but all too dark retelling of Peter Pan, with Wendy and her brothers on an island powered by a magical whale.

Peter Pan1924 (promoted)

The very first live action Peter Pan (played by actress Betty Bronson) was a silent fantasy released by Paramount Pictures. It is noteworthy for some changes made compared to the original work: for example Tinker Bell is in the flesh, instead of being just a reflection as in the stage version.
