Peru's Congress voted on Thursday (4) against formally debating the launch of impeachment proceedings against President Dina Boluarte, who faces an investigation into her possession of expensive jewelry, including luxurious Rolex watches.
Boluarte, who took office in 2022 as Peru's sixth president in just six years, faces an investigation for alleged illicit enrichment through the improper acquisition of luxury Rolex watches. She denied all wrongdoing.
Congress supported on Wednesday (3) the new list of government ministers in a vote of confidence in the last cabinet. Nearly a third of the ministers resigned earlier this week following a weekend raid on Boluarte's residence.
On Thursday, lawmakers rejected two separate motions to bring the impeachment issue up for debate.
Peru's politics are highly polarized and the Constitution allows presidents to be impeached for “moral incapacity,” a subjective measure that has been used to impeach several former leaders.
Approval was an unlikely scenario, as conservative and right-wing lawmakers signaled support for the president, claiming they were seeking to avoid a major crisis.
Almost all high-ranking Peruvian officials or former presidents have been investigated by prosecutors or have been involved in corruption cases over the past three decades.
This includes Boluarte's predecessor, Pedro Castillo, who was impeached in December 2022 for trying to shut down Congress and was later arrested.
