Peruvian Prime Minister Anibal Torres submitted his resignation to President Pedro Castillo today, citing “personal reasons” in a letter shared on Twitter.
Anibal Torres, who took office last February, is the fourth prime minister to submit his resignation to President Castillo, who has been mired in scandal since taking office just over a year ago. It is also characteristic that the Prosecutor’s Office has launched five investigations against President Castillo, something unprecedented in the country’s history.
The cases concern fuel market influence by the state-owned Petroperu company, alleged obstruction of justice in the ouster of the interior minister, allegations of corruption and collusion in public works, influence in a military promotion file, and plagiarism in his university thesis.
Protected by his presidential immunity until the end of his term in 2026, he cannot be charged and brought to trial. In addition to the legal problems, Pedro Castillo has faced two impeachment attempts in Congress with the question of impeachment.
