Peru: At least six dead from the shipwreck in the Amazon

Six people have died and three are missing after a boat capsized in a river in Peru’s Amazon region, the Navy said Wednesday. “Currently we have six dead,” Captain Jonathan Novoa told Peru Noticias television. The victims were between 30 and 45 years old. The boat, which was carrying 48 passengers including several teachers, was crossing the Ukayali River when it collided with a tree trunk in the morning, causing it to sink. Search operations are underway in an effort to locate the three missing persons. Most of the passengers, however, were rescued by nearby ships. An investigation is underway. The ship left Tuesday afternoon from the port of Pucallpa, more than 700 km northeast of the capital Lima, bound for the city of Atalaya. Source: RES
