At least 13 people died and five others were seriously injured after the traffic accident that occurred in Peru on Saturday, when a bus crashed into a cliff in the Andes, according to local authorities.
The accident happened in the morningwhen a bus carrying about fifty passengers from the Andean city of Vilcachuaman to the capital Lima overturned and plunged down a 200-meter cliff in the Huancavelica region, in the southeastern part of the country.
“We have thirteen dead and five very seriously injured after the accident and the fall of the bus over a cliff on the Los Libertadores highway”a police officer in a section of the Waitara district, in Wankavelika, told AFP.
Earlier, the state-run Andina news agency had reported “at least ten dead”.
Police and firefighters rushed to retrieve the victims, among whom are children.
“There are bodies scattered about. Firefighters and police are conducting a rescue operation”the head of health services in Waitara, Alvino Rojas, told state television.
The most seriously injured were taken to the town of Pisco.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, mainly due to the development of excessive speed by drivers and the poor condition of many roads.
