Pepe Mujica reveals that he was diagnosed with an esophageal tumor

Former Uruguayan president José “Pepe” Mujica revealed, this Monday (29), that he was diagnosed with an esophageal tumor. At a press conference, he stated that he will continue to fight, but did not give details of what his treatment will be like.

Mujica, who is 88 years old, said he was diagnosed when he went for a check-up last Friday (26). “It is doubly complex in my case because I have suffered from an immunological disease for more than 20 years that has affected, among other things, my kidneys, which creates obvious difficulties with chemotherapy and surgery. All of this is being evaluated,” he explained.

“I will continue to fight with my companions, faithful to my way of thinking and entertained with my vegetables, with my chickens”, he guaranteed, stating that as long as he can hold out he will be active. “I want to convey to the girls and boys of our country that life is beautiful and wears out (…) there is no point in sacrificing it for stupidity,” he said, adding that it is necessary to transform anger into hope and “start again every every time you fall.”

“I'm not a doctor, I have no idea what they're going to do. Don’t ask me anything about medicine,” Mujica told journalists.

Mujica, from the leftist Frente Ampla party, presided over Uruguay between 2010 and 2015. After leaving power, he served as a senator until 2020.

In the 1970s, Mujica was a guerrilla member of the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement and was imprisoned from 1972 to 1984.

His less-than-luxurious style during his presidency made him known and admired around the world.
