The government of Pernambuco transferred, on Tuesday (1st), 472 detainees of the Professor Barreto Campelo Penitentiary, located on the island of Itamaracá, in the metropolitan region of Recife (RMR), for three other prisons in the state.
The decision was taken by the Pernambuco Penitentiary Administration and Resocialization Secretariat (Seap), which disabled the penitentiary, in operation for over five decades. The structural deterioration of the site was one of the main factors for the measure.
To transfer the prisoners, the final operation was launched, which was attended by 115 criminal police, 12 civil police, 332 military police, as well as staff of the Fire Department, Federal Highway Police and Intelligence Services.
Professor Barreto Campelo Penitentiary had a capacity of 640 detainees of the closed regime. According to the State Government, deactivation was necessary due to the precarious conditions of the facilities.

The living areas, the administrative and support sectors were equally deteriorated, aggravated by the lack of preventive and corrective maintenance. The sewage system also had flaws, and the structures of the walls and walkways were not in good condition.
“I consider a great advance to the state prison system, because the deactivation of Barreto Campelo means care and respect with the deprived population of liberty and the professionals who worked there. We will continue with all the necessary changes to the process of resocialization of the inmate,” said the secretary of Penitentiary Administration and resocialization, Paulo Paes.
Inaugurated on December 13, 1973, Barreto Campelo Penitentiary was, for five years, the only male prison unit for closed regime in RMR. In recent years, the unit has been the scene of several riots and occurrences.
In addition, residents of Itamaracá Island, a coastal area, had been requesting the unit’s closure. The detainees were transferred to three Penitentiary of the Curado Prison Complex in Recife and to the Itaquitinga Penitentiary, in the interior of Pernambuco.
