The Ukrainian Embassy in Brazil held a press conference this Wednesday (24), in celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day. During the event, Anatoliy Tkach, the country’s chargé d’affaires in Brazil, stated that a peace agreement will only be possible after Russia withdraws its troops. Ignacio Ybáñez, European Union ambassador to Brazil, also attended the ceremony.
“We don’t trust Russia, any peace negotiation will be possible only after the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine, we want to liberate all our territories,” the official told reporters.
Tkach also made clear the intention to compose the European Union (EU) and highlighted fear of new attacks during the week, due to the commemorative date. “We are expecting that this week Russia will make cruel provocations, this could include attacks on Ukrainian cities with missiles and also the prosecution of defenders of the city of Mariupol,” he explained.
Ybáñez spoke about the rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU and pointed out that the European Council’s decision that Ukraine is a candidate for accession to the bloc demonstrates solidarity with Ukrainians.
“Now Ukraine is suffering. May they have the idea of a much better future, looking ahead. And that future can be as part of the European Union,” he added.
The ambassador also stressed that sanctions do not apply to food products and made it clear that fertilizers can be freely traded. “Fertilizers, which have been a constant concern for Brazil, are outside the sanctions packages,” he concluded.
The Ukrainian people celebrate their independence on the same day that the war is six months old – Russia started the invasion on February 24th. Despite thousands of deaths, Ukraine celebrates the fact that Russia failed to completely dominate the country.
