A 66-year-old woman was arrested red-handed by the Federal Police of Caruaru after trying to carry out biometric registration on behalf of another person at a Caixa Econômica Federal branch, in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, in Agreste de Pernambuco.
According to the PF, the woman, from São Paulo, had already tried the same procedure on two other occasions, but was recognized by the agency’s employees, who called the Municipal Guard. When approached, she revealed that she was carrying a false document.
The attempted fraud occurred last Wednesday (22) and was announced by the Federal Police this Sunday (26). During the Municipal Guard’s approach, the elderly woman admitted her true identity and confirmed that the falsified document was intended to allow the improper withdrawal of valuables, if she was successful in the biometric registration attempt.
After being detained, the woman was taken to the Federal Police Station in Caruaru, where she was charged with attempted fraud. “She has already undergone a custody hearing, having been released, and must comply with the precautionary measures of periodic appearance in court and prohibition of entering bank branches”, informed the head of communication of the Federal Police of Pernambuco, Giovanni Santoro, to CNN .
THE CNN contacted Caixa Econômica Federal in the Northeast, which stated in a note that “it works together with public security bodies in investigations and operations that help combat fraud and scams. The bank emphasizes that it continuously monitors its products, services and banking transactions to identify and investigate suspicious cases”.
