The Irish actor Paul Mescal 28, said his physical characteristics may have helped him be chosen as the protagonist of “Gladiator 2” . He spoke about the subject in an interview with Vanity Fair, which was published this Monday (1st).
“My nose is half Roman, so it’s useful in this context [do filme]. The nose I absolutely hated when I was in school – and was teased about – became extremely useful when Ridley [Scott, diretor] needed someone for ‘Gladiator 2’,” he said.
Mescal recalled the first meeting he had with the film’s director, Ridley Scott and highlighted that his experience in the sport may also have been one of the factors that led him to the role.
“We talked for about 20 to 30 minutes. I wanted to know what the story was going to be about, so we spent about 15 minutes talking about that, and then we spent another 10 minutes talking about the sport I played growing up – Gaelic football. Maybe that helped, as I’m used to being physical in my body,” he said.
To prepare for his role as Lucius, the Irish actor began following an intense exercise routine. The first images of Mescal as the character have been released, see below here .
“I just wanted to be big and strong and look like someone who can do some damage when the shit hits the fan,” he explained.
“Gladiator 2” continues the feature film starring Russell Crowe in 2000, in which Maximus, a powerful Roman general, arouses the wrath of Marcus Aurelius’ son before the emperor’s death. When the heir takes power, he is sentenced to death, however, he manages to escape and goes into hiding as a slave and gladiator while seeking revenge.
The new film will have a time jump and has as its protagonist Lucius, son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus, who was inspired by the Gladiator, and is now Emperor.
When he was still a child, Lucilla sent him to the north coast of Africa, to a region called Numidia that was—at that time—outside the reach of the Roman Empire. He never fully understood why, and as he grew stronger, so did his resentment. As he grew older, he He lives a relatively peaceful life with his wife and children until the conquerors of his homeland invade his new home, led by a general trained by Maximus.
“Gladiator 2” hits theaters in November this year.
