The press representative of PASOK – Movement for Change, Dimitris Mantzos, characterized the attempt to trap the phone of Nikos Androulakis as “a very serious and dark case”.
Speaking at Open, Mr. Manzos added that for this case “both the Justice and the Government must contribute decisively and actively to clarifying it, so that all the required and necessary explanations are provided to the citizens”.
He even pointed out that “we as a political faction will not back down unless we get the necessary answers. We will not stop fighting the dark forces that are trying to hold our Republic hostage. And we are not saying this just because he is our president. He could to be the political leader of another party, a journalist, a fellow citizen of ours”.
Asked if PASOK-Movement for Change’s suspicion is that the attempt was made in Greece, Mr. Manzos clarified that “it is not a suspicion. It is a given. The detection of the attempt was not made by a private person, but by the European Parliament. It is the only MEP mobile phone on which a trace of an attempt was found. And the most important thing is that this is not a simple monitoring, listening, eavesdropping program. But an entrapment program, full “robotization”, which makes the mobile phone a tool in the hands of a third party, with illegal purposes”, while he recalled that “Google in its public announcement just a few weeks ago estimated that Predator has already been used in the context of state-supported investigations in a number of countries, among which unfortunately Greece”.
PASOK requests a hearing with the Governor of the EYP
In the meantime, the Parliamentary Group of PASOK-Movement for Change with its request to the President of the Committee on Institutions and Transparency of the Parliament, Mr. Athanasios Boura, requests the convening of the Committee and that the Commander of the National Intelligence Service and the President of the Authority be summoned to a hearing of Ensuring the Privacy of Communications, after the indictment filed by the President of the Movement Nikos Androulakis at the Prosecutor’s Office of the Supreme Court for the attempted interception of his mobile phone.
The following is the text of K.O.’s request. PASOK-Movement of Change:
“To the president of the Institutions and Transparency Committee
of the Hellenic Parliament
Mr. Athanasios Boura
Athens, 27/7/2022
Mister President,
The attempt to trap the mobile phone of the President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, which was certified by a special service of the European Parliament, is a major political and moral issue.
We remind you that recently it was revealed that the phone of a well-known journalist was hacked using the same advanced software.
We also recall the opposition party’s complaints about the wiretapping of its headquarters’ call center.
The succession of revelations and complaints is not a random incident, but betrays organized illegal action by opaque mechanisms, unknown, so far, whether they are state or private.
The belief that Democracy, the Rule of Law and Individual Rights are at risk is reinforced. The answer to the existing risks of undermining Democracy, legitimacy and political normality is not exhausted in the judicial investigation, as will happen, following the indictment filed by the President of PASOK.
The protection of democratic institutions, the constitutional order and political life is an obligation of the entire political world and, in any case, of the democratic faction, which will mobilize every institutional mechanism of transparency to ascertain who is behind the shameful surveillance and the violation of the privacy of communications.
In this context, and because critical questions are raised for which answers must be given, the Parliamentary Group of PASOK – Movement for Change takes the initiative to hereby request the immediate convening of the Institutions and Transparency Committee, in which the Commander of the National Intelligence Service and the President of the Communications Privacy Authority, as the parliamentary control over the independent authorities and the activity of the EYP belongs to the Institutions and Transparency Committee (Article 43A of the Rules of Procedure of the Hellenic Parliament)”.
