The Democratic Action party, from Venezuela, asked the National Primary Commission on Friday (20) to postpone the opposition’s primary elections scheduled for Sunday, until some issues that the party highlights are overcome.
In a conference and through a public letter sent to the president of the Commission, Jesús María Casal, they stated that some “serious irregularities” alter the normality of the process, including the displacement of electoral centers, which, according to the party, would cause a fall in electoral participation.
The National Primary Commission is an autarchy to oversee this Sunday’s primary elections, with ten candidates competing for a unified candidacy to face whoever represents the party in power in 2024, be it current president Nicolás Maduro or another figure from the ruling party.
Democratic Action stated that their party has received a lower distribution of members at polling stations compared to their opponents, which they consider a disadvantage.
The party also complains that “the distribution of electoral material has not been carried out” in “the majority of States” in the country.
The letter does not propose a date for the primary elections, it only requests that they be postponed until what they report is corrected.
The National Primary Commission reacted on the official X account (formerly Twitter), inviting party representatives to address “their proposals” this Saturday.
Ten opposition candidates will compete this Sunday in the opposition primaries.
