Part of a two-story property collapsed this Thursday morning (18) on Rua Fonseca Teles, in São Cristóvão, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Nobody was injured in the incident. Firefighters from the Vila Isabel barracks, also in the North Zone, were called at 8:59 am.
The building, which worked for years as the headquarters of a radio station, was deactivated. A demolition work on the structure was taking place without the authorization of the city hall. According to the municipal administration, the company Riva Emcorporadora only had a permit to build, but the demolition document was pending. Now, the work can be embargoed.
A house next door was hit by debris from the landslide and had to be closed. Debris obstructed the only access to the site and residents had to be removed through the window with the help of a ladder.
Maria de Fátima Costa, 86 years old, was bedridden. She left the building after firefighters sawed through the window bars. Two other people were removed from the property, in addition to a dog.
According to witnesses, the work took place for about two weeks without signage.
A CNN seeks contact with Riva Incorporadora.
