The city of Paris canceled its traditional fireworks display on the iconic avenue Champs-Elysées to welcome the New Year due to the increase of Covid-19, announced the city of the French capital this Saturday (18).
“The city of Paris regrets canceling all planned festivities on the Champs-Elysées on December 31 due to the resurgence of the pandemic and new government announcements specified this Friday, December 17,” the city hall said in a statement.
“We hope that the year 2022 will allow us to celebrate joyful moments together and we wish you our expectation of sharing with your loved ones a beautiful holiday period,” the statement states.
The news follows the announcement of the French prime minister, Jean Castex, that large outdoor events and gatherings will be banned on New Year’s Eve as the country faces its fifth wave of infections from Covid-19.
Castex said that the variant Omicron was spreading quickly across the France and that “it will become the dominant variant in early 2022”. He called on people to take tests “in the hours before the holidays” and “to act responsibly”.
France reported 48,808 new Covid-19 cases, an increase of nearly 7% from last week as of Dec. 13, according to French government data.
