Papa Francisco asked for the end of violence in Gaza in a posthumous opinion article

Prior to his death on Monday (21), Pope Francis requested the end of the “cycle of violence and retaliation” in the Middle East in an opinion article posthumously published in The Parliament magazine on Tuesday (22).

Titled “The Blood Spill in Palestine/Israel must end,” the Pontiff asked for peace throughout the Holy Land, a place that, according to him, witnessed “atrocious wars, resulting in a river of blood that does not cease.”

Francisco, who had long criticized Israel’s war in Gaza and often asked for a ceasefire at the enclave, described the war as an “illusion” that brings death and destruction instead of a solution.

“Building peace requires courage, much more than war,” he wrote, emphasizing the need for strength through peace.

“Unfortunately, very often in the history of humanity, those who propose peace are seen as weak, while those who arrange themselves to the teeth are presented to the seduction of being strong and being in charge. This is also a great illusion,” he added in the text.

Pope Francis reiterated his support for a solution of two states, “which provides for a state of Israel and a state of Palestine living side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition,” he said.

“To both peoples and the international community, I would say, God and future generations will judge us not for how many enemies we defeat, but how many lives we save,” he concluded.

Pope Francis’ death

Francisco, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, took over the title of Pope in March 2013.

He marked the history of the Catholic Church as the first Latin American Pope and the first Jesuit to occupy the position.

The 88-year-old pontiff died after a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released on Monday (21).

The document, published by the Vatican, states that Francis went in a coma before his death on the morning of Monday (21).
