Papa Francisco appears in St. Peter’s Square during Ramos Sunday

Pope Francis made a surprise appearance this Sunday (13), during the celebrations of Sunday of Ramos in St. Peter’s Square.

The pontiff, which left the hospital three weeks ago, was in a wheelchair and without nasal oxygen respirators. Francisco went through the faithful gathered and wished a good Sunday from Ramos and a good Holy Week.

The Catholic Church had not confirmed the Pope’s presence in the celebrations. Doctors recommended two months rest for Francisco to allow his body to recover fully after spending more than a month hospitalized with a respiratory infection.

Holy Week, the busiest of the year for the Catholic Church, marks the moment when Christians resemble the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

On Saturday (12), the Pontiff went to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maior, in Rome, to pay tribute to Our Lady before the celebrations.

The Pontiff also met as King Charles III and Queen Camilla, from the United Kingdom, on Wednesday (9). Buckingham Palace said Charles and Camilla “were delighted that the Pope was well enough to receive them.”
