‘Pablo Escobar of Brazil’ is arrested in Hungary

The Brazilian federal police arrested one of the “biggest traffickers in the world” in Hungary on Tuesday, with the nickname “Brazilian Pablo Escobar”, who escaped from 2020 and is suspected of being the leader of a huge cocaine trafficking ring in Europe.

The Brazilian police, who cooperated with Interpol, “confirm the arrest of Sergio Hoberto de Carvalho, known as ‘police officer Carvalho’, who is considered one of the biggest traffickers in the world today,” he said in a press release.

According to the Brazilian police, “Pablo Escobar of Brazil”, a former police officer, lived in Europe and used forged documents to escape from the authorities.

Following his arrest in Spain, where he lived under a false identity, for drug trafficking, he was released on bail and forged a death certificate to escape justice, according to a report broadcast by the Brazilian television network Globo Perth.

An arrest warrant was issued for “police officer Carvalho” in November 2020, as part of an operation that led to the seizure of nearly $ 100 million worth of resources “of the criminal organization he led”, according to the Brazilian federal police.

The aim of the operation was to “financially dismantle organizations responsible for transporting tens of tons of cocaine to Europe, using mainly Brazilian ports”.

The survey was conducted in Colombia, Panama, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

“The trick of the criminals was to launder millions of dollars worth of goods and resources in Brazil and abroad, using various straw men and fictitious companies, in order to give a legitimate appearance to the profits they made from trafficking,” the federal police explained at the time.
