Oscar 2024 voting closes; find out how it works

Oscar 2024 voting closed on Tuesday (27). The winners' statuettes will be awarded at the 96th ceremony, which will be held on March 10, at the Dolby Theater, in Los Angeles, United States.

The nominees were announced on January 23rd, but do you know what the voting process is like? A CNN explains below.

Voting is restricted to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is made up of more than 10,000 people linked to the film industry, with around 9,500 active members. They are also responsible for choosing the titles and artists nominated in the 23 categories.

The selection of nominees began on January 11th and ended on the 16th of the same month. Films must be submitted by producers and distributors and follow a series of rules to become eligible – with the exception of the International Film category, in which the film is nominated by a committee from each country.

Most categories are voted on by members of the corresponding branch – actors nominate actors, directors nominate directors, film editors nominate film editors – except Best Picture, where all active members are eligible to vote.

In the case of International Film and Animation, all members can choose to vote, having watched a minimum percentage established by the Academy of eligible films.

This year, the final voting began almost a month after the announcement of the nominees, on February 22nd, and ended on Tuesday (27th).

Unlike the nomination process, all active members can vote in all categories after nominees have been chosen.

The title or professional with the most votes becomes an Oscar winner. The rule is only different for voting for Best Film, which follows the “preferential vote” system.

In the case of the main award category, voters make a ranking of the nominated productions. The film that comes first in more than 50% of the lists becomes the big winner.

If the percentage is not reached, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the company responsible for administering the vote, redistributes the votes from the film that came in first place the fewest times to the title that came in second place on the list of members who placed it first.

How is Oscar voting done?

Voting on nominations is indicated through online ballots. All votes are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers and results are announced live. Final voting is also carried out online.

After the count, only two partners at PricewaterhouseCoopers are aware of the results until the envelopes are opened on stage during the Oscar ceremony.
