Oscar 2024: Does Brazil compete for the awards?

A 96th Academy Awards the most prestigious film awards in the world, takes place next Sunday (10), with a vast list of nominees.

Over the years, Brazil has been present at the Oscars, both with entirely national productions and with participation in foreign productions.

For the 2024 edition, the country competed in the “Best International Film” and “Best Documentary” nominations, with “Ghost Portraits” work of Kleber Mendonça Filho. The production was announced by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts as chosen to compete for the award in September 2023.

The production premiered on August 24, 2023 at the Cannes Festival, in France. A few months later, on November 2, it arrived in the Netflix catalog.

Despite being acclaimed at the Festival, Brazil's pre-selected production ended up being left out of the general shortlist, released in December 2023, in both categories, leaving the country officially left out of the 2024 Oscars. It also went to the Gramado festivals and the New York Film Festival in the United States.

“Retratos Fantasmas” is produced by Cinemascope and co-produced and distributed by Vitrine Filmes.

The documentary has the city of Recife, in Pernambuco, as its backdrop, and tells the story of the center of the place told from the movie theaters that moved the population and dictated behavior.

The Oscar already had Brazilian names on its list of competitors. Whether for films that competed in the main category of the award, such as “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, or for Brazilian actresses who were nominated in the “Best Actress” category, such as Fernanda Montenegro, the country has been represented at the event since 1945.

His first nomination for the award came when the song “Rio de Janeiro”, by Ary Barroso, competed for the “Best Original Song” category, for the American film “Brazil”.

The country, however, has never taken home a statuette and has not received a nomination for the award since 2020, when the documentary “Democracia em Vertigem”, directed by Petra Costa and produced by Tiago Pavan, was among the final nominees for “Best Documentary” .
