The number of organ transplants grew by 25% in Rio de Janeiro last year. Almost 500 people underwent transplants in the state, according to data from the State Department of Health.
Rio de Janeiro baby Calíope Silva, ten months old, received a new organ when she was hospitalized and presented with a genetic malformation that causes irreversible dilation of the heart.
While she was hospitalized, the family received the news that a compatible donor had been found and that the new heart was on the way. The transplant, performed six months ago, was a success, offering the girl a new chance at life.
“Organ donation is about solidarity and information, which is why we invest in ongoing training for professionals working on the Donation Committees. Anyone who donates a family member’s organ is helping to save someone’s life at a time of loss,” explained RJ Transplantes coordinator Alexandre Cauduro.
The growth is not limited to the number of transplant recipients, but also to the number of donors. According to data from RJ Transplantes, 217 organ donations were made in the first half of this year, an increase of 15% compared to the same period in 2023, when 188 donations were made.
The most collected organs during the period were kidney (266), liver (151) and heart (19).
The state health network currently has 106 Donation Committees distributed across units in the state’s main hospitals; these committees play a fundamental role in cooperation and success.
