OPPO promises 4 versions of Android and 5 years of security updates. But not for all smartphones

In August this year, OPPO introduced its ColorOS 13 shell and focused on deploying it as quickly as possible on existing smartphone models. Now, the Chinese tech giant has announced that it intends to expand software support for select flagships as early as next year.

OPPO wants to offer users four major operating system updates and five years of security patches for certain smartphone models. This decision is in line with OnePlus, which announced similar plans earlier this year. By the way, Samsung was the first Android smartphone manufacturer to offer such an update schedule for its flagship devices. Google is doing worse. Despite being an Android developer, the search giant lags behind its competitors with only three major system updates and five years of security patches.

Returning to ColorOS 13, 33 OPPO smartphones around the world received this version of the shell. This is more than all previous versions, and when compared with ColorOS 12, the result is 1.5 times better. Thus, ColorOS 13 is the largest and at the same time the fastest update in its history. It remains to be hoped that OPPO will expand software support to mid-range smartphones, as well as encourage other manufacturers to go beyond current updates when they release only one or two major system updates.
