The State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainable Development (SEMAD) launched Operation Adsumus III to curb deforestation in the Northwest and North regions of the state between May 13th and 18th.
During the actions, 3.5 thousand hectares of vegetation were found to be illegally removed and fines were imposed that could reach the value of approximately R$30 million. The operation was carried out in conjunction with the Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG).
The targets were areas of deforestation detected by satellite images, located in the municipalities of Chapada Gaúcha, Formoso, Gameleiras, Catuti, Matias Cardoso, Montalvânia, JuvenÃlia, Manga, Pai Pedro, Mato Verde, JaÃba and Monte Azul.
The locations have native vegetation characteristic of the Cerrado, Caatinga and Atlantic Forest biomes. 73 deforestation areas were inspected, and several irregularities were found, such as removal of native vegetation without authorization, removal and destruction of woody material resulting from illegal deforestation, disregard for the suspension of activities and implementation of agricultural crops in areas previously fined and suspended.
Activities at the sites were immediately suspended. Inspectors also seized a tractor and 527 cubic meters of native firewood.
The Government of Minas, through Semad, provides several channels for environmental complaints and counts on the support of society to monitor and report evident or suspected irregular practices. The complaint, or request for environmental inspection, can be made by LigMinas (call 155 – option 7) or through this linkwhich provides more information on the subject.
