Operation removes 49 people from clandestine rehabilitation clinic in RS

A clandestine rehabilitation clinic was closed in Maquiné, 128 kilometers from Porto Alegre, in an operation by the Civil Police, the Military Brigade and the Electoral Public Ministry. The 49 people who were hospitalized at the scene were rescued by the authorities.

The clinic operated irregularly for five months until it was banned on Tuesday (8). She was also in quilombola territory, where the presence of establishments and commercial activities is prohibited.

According to Maquiné’s Health Secretary, João Marcos de Carvalho, the rescued patients are chemical and alcoholic dependents. Some of them claimed to have been interned against their will.

Patients are aged between 20 and 50 years. They reported recurrent practices of torture and ill-treatment, and were “housed in an inhumane way”, according to the Municipality of Maquiné.

On site, rotten food and out of date were found. There were also not enough beds for the number of patients in the place, which had precarious conditions of rooms and bathrooms.

According to the Municipal Health Department, contact was made with all the relatives of the inmates, who were sent to their respective cities.

The clinic, which did not have its name revealed, was discovered through complaints from residents of the region and publications of the installation itself on social networks. According to the Civil Police, in addition to being located in quilombola territory, the place also did not have an operating license, which led to the interdiction by the Sanitary Surveillance.

The case is being investigated as a kidnapping and false imprisonment.
